Hey, I'm

Nic Vickery

Engineering Leader

I build teams and systems that ship energy products at scale.

I'm an engineering leader with nine years of experience building software and teams. I started my career developing financial planning software, before joining a renewable energy startup where I helped scale the platform from 200 monitored sites to over 5,000. I led the front-end team, then transitioned to Chief Architect before the company was acquired by Schneider Electric.

I currently lead engineering and architectural direction for distributed IoT energy systems at Schneider Electric, working closely with teams across the globe. My focus is on creating clarity by translating product goals into actionable technical plans, helping engineers navigate ambiguity, and ensuring we deliver reliable, impactful software in a complex domain.

I work across event-driven data pipelines, backend services in Go/Python, containerised cloud and edge deployments, and the interfaces that connect devices, services, and consumer applications. A large part of my role involves coaching engineers, establishing shared patterns, and guiding architectural decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term maintainability.

Outside work, I'm into gaming, strength training, and occasionally building overly powerful PCs. I live in Sydney with my partner and spend my downtime relaxing, learning, or playing with my two cats, Peanut and Bug.

Experience

2025 — Present

Projects

Clipsal Cortex

Intelligent Home Energy Management

A comprehensive HEMS platform providing real-time and historical energy insights, cost tracking, automated bill parsing, and smart device scheduling. Integrates with Tesla, Amber Electric, Sensibo, and supports IEEE 2030.5 CSIP for grid interaction. I was a founding engineer on the platform, responsible for the core architecture and delivery across multiple teams.
